West Virginians are a proud people. We believe in a set of core values, including hard work and honesty, we have faced adversity and always clung fiercely to our faith. The greatest resource we have is our people!

Mission West Virginia is committed to building upon our resources, and bringing together our people for the common good. We invite you to join us in this effort. Congregations, agencies, groups and individuals are invited to contact any of our staff or Board of Directors to explore how we might join together in “a union of effort.”

Mission West Virginia is constantly evolving. We are always looking to identify a need and then search out creative solutions to help others help themselves. We are committed to finding collaborative partners from faith communities, community-based groups, government agencies, institutions of higher education and the business community that will come together around common concerns to benefit our communities and our people.

It all started with an idea...

In January, 1997 at a service of prayer and celebration preceding his inaugural, the late Governor Cecil H. Underwood shared his vision of a bold new approach to address significant societal issues facing West Virginians. He called upon all those gathered, representing the faith communities of the state, to launch MISSION WEST VIRGINIA. He described this venture as a “union of effort” to bring together the public and private sectors, and those motivated to be change agents through both the sacred and secular, to build upon that which we hold in common. From this vision, Mission West Virginia, Inc. was born.

Since its inception, Mission West Virginia has been successful at securing financial support from state and federal government grants, private foundations, corporations, and individuals. Good stewardship of resources entrusted to the care of Mission West Virginia has been a hallmark of the organization from its very beginning.

More than 200 agencies, organizations and communities of faith have actively collaborated with Mission West Virginia over the past few years. The organization has been widely recognized as an innovative and effective non-profit organization to provide support and resources to local congregations and other non-profit organizations throughout West Virginia, as well as eastern Kentucky.
